I'm Back

After what feels like an extraordinary amount of time I am back. Life has taken some twists and turns that kept me away from Oh My Blog for way too long. Here I am again ready to observe, learn and share.

Being Happy..All the Time?

I think I have been a little irritable lately. My fuse seems to be getting shorter and shorter and I cannot help but wonder if this is just a direct result of being pregnant. Maybe I am just in a bad mood. Anyway, I have found myself wondering how some people seem to be genuinely happy....all the time. There is always a smile on their faces and a kind word ready to be uttered from their lips. They look great! Is this all an act? Are these people masters of deception? Is it possible to be happy all the time? If it is, I'd love to know their secret. As always I would love to read what you have to say.

Regaining Control

Anyone who knows me knows I like things orderly. From the laundry being finished to the house being picked up, I pride myself on my system of control. Lately though I am losing "control" being pregnant has put me on slow motion whether I want to be or not and I am finding it a bit difficult to cope with. Everyone seems to assure me that once I am out of my first trimester I will feel a sudden burst of energy and suddenly feel great. Guess what? That day is approaching fast and I see no light at the end of the tunnel. Maybe I should take it easy and learn to "chill out" but really...can you teach an old dog new tricks?

Are you a complainer?

I probably complain more than I should. The days become long and daunting sometimes and as any sane person I become overwhelmed. This is normal right? I came across an article that I think will help me kick the complaining habit. Check it out and let me know what your thoughts are. Are you a complainer?

Thank You Apple Store Genius

This past Tuesday evening a most terrible incident occurred. My hard drive crashed! Oh the despair! Visions of a huge dent in my bank account as I purchased a new computer invaded my every thought. Then...a moment of realization...let's call apple support. 20 minutes later I was calm and collected with a next day appointment scheduled at the apple store. With a few quick questions and a few loosened screws to my laptop the problem was resolved; all for a mere $120!

Mere $120? you ask. Yes a minimal sum compared to the $1200 a new MacBook would have cost me. Cheers apple store genius! Thanks to you I am up and running.

My First Award!

This morning while checking up on my favorite blogs I discovered that my friend Toni had given me my very first blog award. Toni is from Australia and is a fantastic soul. Her blog little suitcase is a little bit of sunshine everyday. Being a recipient of this award I was asked by Toni to write seven things about myself..so here goes.

1. I absolutely love to read!
2. I always have had a secret desire to be a singer.
3. When I was a kid my best friend and I loved to dress alike.
4. I dislike messes very much. As a result I am constantly rearranging things.
5. My new favorite color is Orange.
6. I love to collect bookmarks. My latest acquisition has cute little gnomes on it.
7. If I could I would sprinkle blue cheese on almost everything. I love blue cheese.

So there you are...some random, maybe a little bit silly things about me.

Now to tag 7 of my fellow bloggers.

1. Tracy from alotusgirl
2. Jessica from lavender and lilies
4. Dani from The Power of Two
5. Melissa from Operation Nice
6. Jesse from Good Girl Gone Glad

So there is my list, if the people above choose to play along, they will need to...
:: Post the logo of the blog love token
:: Thank and link to the person who passed it on to them
:: List seven things about themselves
:: Pass the token on to seven other bloggers (and leave comments on their blogs to let them know they have been loved).

The Silver Lining

Monday has arrived and I am back ready to blog away. The past month has been a bit surreal for me and I am finding it a little difficult to fall back into my daily routine. Huge, life changing events are taking place around me and I am finding it all a tad overwhelming. One such event is my best friend being diagnosed with a rare form of cancer. Three weeks ago she underwent surgery to treat her illness and this is only the first step in a long and difficult process in order to eradicate this disease. The news that she was so so sick was a shock to everyone around her. No one saw this coming. In the weeks since her surgery I have visited with her often and must say that her positive attitude and unbreakable spirit are truly inspirational. She is looking a the silver lining of the dark cloud that decided to loom over her for awhile. All this has made me reflect on my life and whether I look for the silver lining....most of the time I must admit that I don't. What better wake up call for me than what is happening right now. Do you look for the bright side of things? Do you look for the silver lining?

Friendship

In the past few days I have had the opportunity to see old friends and reflect on my relationships with new friends. I am truly blessed to be part of such a wonderful circle of beautiful, energetic, successful, vibrant and phenomenal women. My friends encourage me to be who I truly am and accept me and love me for just that. Oh My Blog has provided me the opportunity to make new and exciting friends that enrich my life daily with wit and wisdom. I am so very lucky! What about you? Do your friends inspire you to be a better you? I'd love to read about your friends!

Balance

After a few weeks of much needed and anticipated vacation time I am back. My time away from Oh My Blog has been bittersweet. My days have been filled with wonderful memories and heartbreaking news. This reminds me that life is a balance of the good and bad and that both must be embraced equally. Sometimes important news whether good or bad is enough to remind us that life is a short journey that must be lived fully! As always I would love to read what you have to say.

Love to Read

Reading is probably my very favorite pastime. There is nothing like having a brand new book in your hand and knowing that inside a new world awaits you. People often ask me what kind of books I like to read and my answer usually is anything and everything. I read what catches my attention, what fuels my spirit and what brings laughter to my life. How can all this be captured by reading just "one type" of book. What do you read? What are you reading now? What would you like to read? You all know how much I look forward to what you have to say. Drop me a line...I would love to hear from you.

Being a Better Person

Happy Hump Day everyone! The weekend is around the corner and I must admit it has been a busy week so far. In between errands and chores I have had some time to think about what it is I want to accomplish daily in order to make the world a happier place. Each morning I wake with the drive and desire to make a difference one small step at a time. I surf the internet constantly reading blogs and articles that make me happy and most importantly make me think. What can I do better? What can I contribute? CNN published an article in February of this year stating 10 things people could do in a week to become a better person. I will post the link to the article below so that you all may read and decide for yourselves if you too can become better people.

Do you think you could use a little improvement? I know I sure can. One small step can make all the difference.

The Wealth of the World

We tend to forget that happiness doesn't come as a result of getting something we don't have, but rather of recognizing and appreciating what we do have. ~Frederick Keonig

I came across this quote today and realized how much sense it made to me. It is essential to be grateful for what you have in your life. Stop comparing your "stuff" to what others have. What you have is enough. Be happy, be grateful, be compassionate and be giving. Just think by being all these things you hold the wealth of the world in your hands. Happy Saturday everyone!

The Power of Two

Happy hump day! Wednesday has arrived and it brings all of us just one step closer to the weekend ~ how fabulous! I'd like to share the most touching, most wonderful story with you all, it is about a project fellow blogger Dani at http://twodollarproject.blogspot.com/ has taken on.

Dani is conducting a project where she leaves envelopes that contain two dollars all over everywhere she goes...the grocery store, the library, the post office etc. Also in the envelope is a card asking whoever finds it to email her and tell her what they did with the two dollars. It is her small way of making a difference in people's lives. Two dollars might seem like very little but it can make a difference. Visit her blog and find out how. She has a great video posted that explains her project better than I ever could. It is very touching and I guarantee it will make you smile today. Her blog The Power of Two is under my blog list on the right!

Words To Live By

One of my very favorite quotes. Very wise man that Mr. Wilde.

A Happy Place

Good morning to all! As I have mentioned before my days begins with a cup of coffee and a review of all the blogs I read daily. My friend Toni who has a wonderful blog named Metropolitain which celebrates her love of all things French, posted something that immediately made me happy. I decided to recapture her post in order to share it with all of you. There is a graphic designer named Fifi Mandirac who lives in the most beautiful place and designs the cutest paper goods, fabrics etc you will ever see. Just looking through her pictures brings a smile to my face. What a happy place to live! Take a look for yourself....I am posting some pics below. You may also visit here website at http://fifimandirac.com and since you are already surfing the net stop by and visit Toni's blog as well at http://lefrancemetro.blogspot.com

Kindness

I love this quote by Emelia Earhart, I think it too great not to share. Enjoy your Sunday everyone!

No kind action ever stops with itself. One kind action leads to another. Good example is followed. A single act of kindness throws out roots in all directions, and the roots spring up and make new trees. The greatest work that kindness does to others is that it makes them kind themselves.

Remind Yourself to be Kind

Are you one to write an endless to do list with loads of tasks that just have to be completed? Do you place post it notes in random places around your home or office reminding yourself of things to do?  Do you remind yourself to be kind to yourself and others by tying a string around your finger? Why not wear a string ring?  Visit www.string-ring.com for more.  I can't wait to get mine!

Taking Care of Me

As a busy mom it is hard to remember to take time out for myself.  It is often almost impossible to do.  As a result I (and probably other moms out there) become frustrated and irritable.  I hate feeling this way and decided to do something about it.  I decided that for the next two weeks I am going to give myself a little treat everyday.  Don't misunderstand, I am not planning to buy myself elaborate gifts on a daily basis (especially in today's economy) but I will give myself a little something.  I began treating myself this past Tuesday and so far it is making me feel great.  I would love to hear how you treat yourself and if you haven't started doing so yet...now is as good a time as any to begin.

The Lives Project

Summer is here and I know everyone is itching for a good book to read and some cool tunes to listen to.  I have a solution...it is called The Lives Project.  The Lives Project is a collaborative effort that my friend and author Gil Gonzalez and talented musician Jon Taglieri put together in order to amaze you all.

Please visit their website at http://www.thelivesproject.com/ for all the information you need in order to get your hands on a copy.

Carpe Diem

Life is short and most people don't realize the truth of this statement until it is too late.  We live our lives in such hectic manners that we literally never "stop and smell the roses".  Today I am posing a challenge to end this!  I am determined to live my life as best I can, being generous and compassionate to others while taking a little time to take care of me along the way.  Are you up to the challenge?

Today is the Day

Please read the latest from Jeannie Ralston.  I urge everyone to open their hearts and read a great book for a fantastic cause!

Some people just have the right attitude--like the parents of Samantha Garcia. Samanta was born premature four years ago and developed cerebral palsy; her parents looked at this not as a tragedy but as an opportunity to do something meaningful. That's when they created Samantha's Purpose,  a non-profit that provides financial assistance to the parents of children with special needs who require therapy but are not eligible for governmental assistance.

I'm proud to be donating funds from the Seed Campaign to Samantha's Purpose during the month of June.
She and her parents prove that often you can't change what happens to you in life, but you can change how you look at what happens to you. This is a theme of my book, but to be honest I think Samantha's parents demonstrate it better than I ever did!

If you've got to buy things, why not make each dollar go farther and help someone else in the process? If you buy your Amazon products through my website, you can be doing good when so many people are in need (and donations are down for many non-profits.) On my home page, click on "Buy the Book," which will take you to Amazon.

Once you're at Amazon, either buy my book (smile! thanks!) or find another product to buy. Amazon will return a commission on any item purchased to the Seed Campaign. EASY!

Something Great Starts Tomorrow

My friend and fantastic author Jeannie Ralston has most generously decided that Samantha's Purpose will be the recipient of her seed campaign funds for the month of June (please visit www.jeannieralston.com and www.samanthas-purpose.org for more information).  For every copy of Jeannie's book The Unlikely Lavender Queen purchased on Amazon, Jeannie will contribute part of her commission to Samantha's Purpose.  How great is that!  You get to read a great book and support a wonderful cause at the same time! You can find links to both websites below.

How To Choose Happiness With Words

Happy Sunday!  I hope wherever you are you are staying dry, it is a wet weekend here in Texas.  I came across a wonderful article that I decided needed to be shared.  How do you choose to be happy?  Does what other people say to you affect your level of happiness?  Read it and share your thoughts.  As always I love to read what you have to say.

How To Choose Happiness With Words

Choose Happiness with Words

This guest post was written by Tehseen, the author of Recharge Your Mind.

Happiness is simply a state of mind.  No, I’m not implying that we can instantly heal the pain of a severe or unexpected personal tragedy just by thinking about being happy.  Rather, I am referring to our levels of happiness on routine days when things in our lives are close to normal.  In these neutral times, when we are neither ecstatic nor extremely sad, the slightest change in attitude can swing our happiness balance drastically in either a positive or negative direction. One of the primary factors that affect our attitude is our choice of words.

Words have a lot of power and influence on both the speaker and the listener.  When we speak we sometimes unintentionally choose words that have a negative undertone.  This can make us seem unhappy (and negative) in the eyes of others.  Even worse, after we have spoken these words our unconscious mind starts believing in them.  “If this is what came out of my mouth, it must be the way I truly feel.”

However, this is not always true.  The first fleeting words that come to mind are not necessarily the most accurate representation of our feelings and intentions.  We must realize that we have the power to choose the words we use, and if we pick them carefully, they can change the way we feel.

Here are three typical scenarios where positive language can inject positivity and happiness into our lives.

Inject Happiness into Casual Communication

Typically, when I ask someone “How are you?” they reply, “I’m fine” or “I’m okay.”  But one lazy Monday afternoon last month a new colleague of mine replied, “Oh, I am fabulous!”  It made me smile, so I asked him what was making him feel so fabulous and he said, “I’m healthy, my family is healthy, and we live in a free country.  So I don’t have any reason not to be happy.”  The difference was simply his attitude and his choice of words.  He wasn’t necessarily any better off than anyone else, but he seemed twenty times happier.

It really struck a chord with me.  Suddenly I realized that I have a choice.  I can either say “the glass is half empty” or “the glass is half full.”  Why not rejoice in the fact that, thankfully, I don’t have anything to be terribly upset about.

So now when someone asks me how I am doing, I say “I’m doing wonderful!” or “Everything is awesome!” or something similar that reflects a positive, happy mood.  Since I’ve made a regular habit of doing this, multiple friends and acquaintances have noticed a positive change in my attitude.  And I do genuinely feel happier.  Also, it seems like the people around me are smiling more now too.  So I guess it’s contagious.

Keep Friendly Discussions Friendly

We’ve all been involved in friendly discussions that turn into heated arguments.  This usually results in a complete breakdown of productive communication.  The reason for this is simple.  When people get into heated arguments they get unhappy, and unhappy people are not productive.  More often than not these arguments transpire due to our choice of words rather than our point of views. If communicated peacefully and appropriately people usually tolerate each other’s perspectives pretty well.  Hence, it’s very important to choose our words wisely even when we strongly disagree with someone.

  • Instead of telling the other person “You always…” try saying “Sometimes you…”.
  • Instead of saying “That’s not true,” try saying “I don’t think I completely understand your point of view.”
  • Instead of telling your friend “I don’t want to go to that bar,” you can say “Oh, we can go to that bar too if you want, but I would rather…”

Using words that make the other person feel negated always creates negativity in conversations.  On the other hand, choosing words that assure the listeners that their perspectives are being respected drastically improves the chances of getting your point across without heating things up.

Wendell Johnson once said:

Always and never are two words you should always remember never to use.

Maintain a Hopeful Outlook

When we are talking or thinking about ourselves we are typically the least careful with our choice of words.  We assume that there are no restrictions on what to say or how to think about our own person.  In some situations this might be true, but the positivity or negativity of our words and thoughts still affect us.

For example, there is a huge difference between saying “I wish I have a house that big someday” versus “It would be great to have a house that big someday.”  The latter gives a greater sense of possibility and confidence which allows us to believe that ‘yes’ it is possible and ‘yes’ it could happen one day.  Whereas, using words like ‘I wish’ makes it seem unreachable and impossible, which generally leads to feelings of discontentment.

Conclusion

These are just some simple examples that illustrate how important it is to choose and use positive words.  Remember, our words transparently coincide with our mindset.  Positive language creates a healthy balance between our mind and our heart.

How Wonderful!

Earlier today I posted about Toni, a wonderful gal living in Australia who is conducting the most extraordinary project called a little me.  Tonight I discovered that she was nice enough to mention me in her blog post about her project.  Thanks Toni!  You can read about it by visiting her blog at http://moderndaypioneers.blogspot.com or simply scroll down the page...there is a link to her blog below.

Being Really Nice

Thursday has arrived, hope today finds you in high spirits and enjoying life!  I follow various blogs daily but one stands out from the rest...it is called Operation Nice (scroll down and you will see the button to this blog).  Melissa who writes this blog talks about what people can do in order to simply be nice.  Doesn't seem like a hard thing to do but in today's world it is harder than we might think.  Today Melissa posted something extraordinary.  There is a woman in Australia who has decided to share a little bit of herself with the world by simply being nice.  She has promised to send everyone who emails her a little gift with no strings attached...REALLY!! This is her way of just being nice.  What a fantastic way to spread a little love around the world. Please check out Operation Nice and there you will find all the information you need.  What would you do to be "really nice"  any ideas?

The Price of Being Nice

Happy Friday to all!  Hope the work week hasn't treated you too badly. May the weekend ahead find you with family and friends.  Today I am asking what does it cost someone to simply be nice? I read a blog daily called Operation Nice (if you scroll down you'll see it on the right side of my blog) which is totally dedicated to promoting niceness.  It gives me a fresh, daily perspective on what it means to be a nice person and the benefits one receives for being such.  How wonderful to read about niceness in a world full of so much hate and spite.  In my daily comings and goings I make a conscious effort to smile (even when I don't feel like it) and say maybe one or two nice words to someone.  By giving a compliment we can make someone's day while making our own at the same time.  The best part of nice is the price....it is FREE!!  Imagine making someone's day for FREE!!! Now I challenge you all...be nice, it won't cost you a thing.

When do you say goodbye for good?

People come in and out of our lives for many reasons.  Sometimes by personal choice and other times by no choice at all.  With the popularity of online social networking on the rise at an alarming pace, more and more people are getting back in touch with each other.  I for one find the Facebook phenomenon fascinating. I have reconnected with so many old friends and even with some who I thought I would never call "friend" again. With this on my mind, I now pose some questions. When do you say goodbye for good? What do you gain by opening up your life for the world to see?  Is it ok to let someone into your life that you once shut out?  Come on people..I need answers.

The Unlikely Lavender Queen

The Unlikely Lavender Queen is a book by a very talented author named Jeannie Ralston.  It is a memoir about her experience moving to the Texas Hill Country just outside of Austin from the metropolis that is New York City.  After moving to Blanco Texas, Jeannie and her husband set about into converting their property into the first of many lavender farms that now dot the area. I don't know if it is my love of lavender or how I can totally relate to Jeannie's experience about moving from a big city to the Texas Hill Country (I am a transplant from Miami), but I think that this book is spectacular.  I wish everyone would read it!  You will laugh, cry and maybe even see a little of yourself in Jeannie's experience. Jeannie rocks!  She is donating proceeds from all purchases of her book made through Amazon.com to a different charity each month.

The Deal Maker (or breaker)

Have you ever wondered how your actions affect other people?  Could your attitude towards someone be the maker or breaker of that person's day?  I'll be honest, I never gave this much thought until recently.  I woke up one morning feeling terrible, everything bothered me...I mean everything!  Even my coffee had a bitter taste.  I carried this "bitter" attitude with me everywhere that day and guess what...everyone I came into contact with seemed "bitter" too. This just added fuel to my fire and made me feel even worse.  Later that day after quenching my mental and physical exhaustion with one (ok maybe 2) glasses of wine...I had an epiphany. Were all those people really being nasty?  Could everyone feel as lousy as I did that day? Impossible!  It was me!  I was making it happen!  What I encountered that day was a reflection of what I felt.  Attitude adjustment was needed on my part. I decided I wanted to see what I project to others and what I want to see is a smile.  Did I make a complete turnaround you ask?  The answer is no but I do turn around and check my attitude before I walk out the door and I definitely look in the mirror and make sure I'm wearing a smile.

How Do Your Honor Your Mom?

With Mother's day just a couple of days away I pose a question...How do you honor your mom? I would love to read what you have to say.  Leave a comment or post away.

I Love These Bracelets

These bracelets are by Italian designer Carolina Bucci. They are absolutely gorgeous. They are definitely on my wish list.

How Do You Go Green?

Like most people I am making an effort to Go Green.  I have made little changes in my everyday life to reflect my desire to keep the Earth a clean and wonderful place.  My first step was buying reusable grocery bags, next came the Earth friendly household cleaners and finally clean burning soy based candles.  Although these minor steps make me feel a little better about what I'm doing for the environment, they are making a major dent in my wallet.  Going green takes some serious GREEN!   This being said, I now pose a few questions to you all....How do you go green?  Is being environmentally aware costing you BIG BUCKS?

Don't mess with the pirate mug

Everyday after dropping off my son at school I visit a local coffeehouse named Cianfrani's.  Here everyone knows your name, you see the same faces day in and day out and you have the best cup of java a buck and a half can buy.  In addition they offer mugs straight off the warmer for customers to enjoy their coffee in.  On my first day at Cianfrani's I chose a nice black mug with a coffee cup dressed as a pirate on it...for some reason the pirate on the mug made me feel as if I was one step from hanging with Captain Jack Sparrow or Captain Morgan himself.  The pirate mug made me cool.  For weeks I would walk in the place and head straight to the pirate mug knowing it was mine...until today.  Today my mug was gone, confscated and as I searched around the room for it, I spotted in the hands of a man that could have been a pirate himself.  My pirate mug had been pirated.  I had to settle for a to go cup instead.  It would have been just wrong to use any other warm mug.

A Test

OHMYBLOG is starting out as a test.  I want to test my endurance in actually writing daily, will this work?  Will I be successful? Can't tell.

What would make me believe that anyone out there would be interested in what  have to say about anything.  I hope some are :)  As a creative outlet blogging is great and since I crave adult conversation, this thing may spark a few.  There will be no method to my madness here, no organization in particular, just random observations and opinions.  Some may agree with me some may not; all I can say is "IF YOU DON"T LIKE IT...DON'T READ IT"
